Honoree's Story

Army Sergeant Curtis Lee Norris, 28, of Dansville, Mich., was assigned to the 210th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y. During his second tour, he was killed on December 23, 2006, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad. He was serving as a vehicle commander at the time of the attack. SGT Norris was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

SGT Norris graduated from Dansville High School in 1997. The third generation of his family to serve in the military, he joined the Army partly because he wanted to travel and experience more of the world.

SGT Norris enjoyed bodybuilding, playing basketball in his family’s backyard, flying, and watching University of Michigan football. "You couldn't ask for a more gentle, loving person than Curt," said Norris' grandmother. "He was always happy-go-lucky, always had a smile for you. We miss him dearly."

SGT Norris was survived by his wife, who was also in the Army, and daughter.
