Army Ranger Sergeant James Casey Joyce, 24, of Plano, Texas was assigned to Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He died on October 3, 1993, during the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia ("Black Hawk Down"). While attempting to obtain medical evacuation for a critically wounded fellow Ranger who had fallen during a helicopter insertion, SGT Joyce was struck by enemy fire and killed.

SGT Joyce graduated from Plano Senior High School in 1987, where he played football and lacrosse. He later attended the University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Texas before deciding his true calling was military service. He enlisted in the Army in November 1990, completed Airborne training, earned the coveted Ranger Tab, and joined the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. SGT Joyce was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device and the Purple Heart.

A fellow Ranger Command Sergeant Major wrote, "SGT Joyce was the epitome of what a Ranger was supposed to be." His parents remembered his infectious smile, unwavering courage, and deep compassion for others.

SGT Joyce was survived by his wife, Shannon, parents and his brother and sister.
