First Lieutenant Roslyn L. Schulte, 25, of Ladue, Mo., was assigned to the 613th Air and Space Operations Center and was deployed to the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. On May 20, 2009, she was killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) struck her convoy near Kabul, Afghanistan, while traveling to an intelligence-sharing meeting at Bagram Airfield.

1stLt Schulte graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2006 where she majored in political science, became a group commander — one of the academy’s highest positions — and captained the lacrosse team. Every May since her passing, the Air Force Academy recognizes an outstanding cadet first class who embodies 1stLt Schulte’s “impeccable character, unwavering leadership and spirit of service.”

She was posthumously awarded the National Intelligence Medal for Valor, becoming the first woman to receive that distinction.

Fellow Airmen remembered "Roz" as someone who inspired those around her with her optimism, professionalism, and willingness to mentor others.
