Army Master Sergeant Timothy L. Martin, 38, of Aurora, IN, was assigned to 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta, Task Force Ranger, U.S. Army Special Forces Command, Fort Bragg, NC. He died on October 3, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, during Operation Gothic Serpent. He was mortally wounded while attempting to reach Rangers and Delta operators engaged in heavy combat when the Humvee in which he was riding was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade.

MSG Martin graduated from Aurora High School in 1974 and immediately enlisted in the Army. After serving with the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, he completed Airborne School, Ranger School, Jungle Warfare Training, Jumpmaster School, Combat Engineer training, and the Special Forces Qualification Course. He was selected for Delta Force in 1982.

MSG Martin was remembered as a quiet professional whose life centered on serving others. His wife, Lori, reflected on his willingness to place himself in danger for his fellow Soldiers, saying, "If it meant saving someone's life, he would do it. That's the kind of person he was."

MSG Martin was survived by his wife, Lori, and their three daughters.
