| Honoree's Story | Army Chief Warrant Officer 3, 39, of Tucson, AZ, was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Carson, CO. He died June 24, 2008, from wounds sustained after a bomb detonated in a building in which his unit was conducting operations.
CWO3 Hammett joined the Army in 1990. Before enlisting he worked at the Southern Arizona Veterans Administration Health Care. Serving his second tour of duty, Hammett was a command and control technician, a high tech position which utilized some of the Army’s most sophisticated electronics and machinery. His unit was responsible for patrolling in an effort to clear satellite connections for communication purposes during combat training, exercises and situations. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.
“He loved his girls and his wife very much,” his sister Kit Wolfe said. “Every time he had to leave them, it just broke a little piece of his heart. He was courageous and brave to keep going over there and doing what he did.”
CWO3 Hammett is survived by his wife, Leanna, and their five daughters.
