Honoree's Story

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brian Hazelgrove, 29 of Fort Rucker, AL, was a pilot assigned to 3rd Battalion, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), based at Fort Drum, NY. He died January 23, 2004, when his OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopter crashed on its way back from a combat mission near Mosul in northern Iraq.

CWO2 Hazelgrove, a graduate of Edinburgh High School, joined the Army in 1994. Before becoming a helicopter pilot, he worked in military intelligence and served two tours of duty in South Korea. He attended Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN and then Embry Riddle for aviation studies after warrant officer school.

“The guy was amazing,” Hazelgrove’s half-brother, Brad Lemon, said. “He thrived in the military and was making it a career.” Outside of the military, he valued education, loved to play golf, ride his harley and devoted time to family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and lived life without regrets.

He is survived by his wife, Kimmi, and four children, Taylor, Zachary, Brandon and Katelyn.
