| Honoree's Story | Army Specialist Anthony Gabriel Green, 28, of Yorktown, Texas was assigned to the 143rd Infantry Detachment out of Austin, Texas. He deployed to Afghanistan in February 2009 on a military humanitarian mission. SPC Green, a farmer, was providing aid to the Afghani farmers, educating them on irrigation and conservation. He was also the resident veterinarian. He died on October 16, 2009, in the Jaghato district, Afghanistan of wounds from an enemy driver IED attack. He was one month away from returning home.
Gabe, as he was called by his friends, graduated from Yorktown High School in 2000 where he played football and was part of the drama club. He was athletic, well-mannered, honest, humble, active and volunteered for whatever needed to be done. He joined the Texas National Guard and had already deployed twice to Iraq; he was awarded the Purple Heart following the second tour.
“He loved working with the (Afghans), teaching them how to irrigate from a windmill they erected, increasing their yield threefold,” said A. Cornell Green, his father.
SPC Green is survived by his wife, Lindsay, and two daughters.
