Honoree's Story

Army Sergeant Caryn Nouv, 29, of Newport News, Virginia, was assigned to 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia during Operation Eduring Freedom. She died July 27, 2013 in Ghanzi Province, Afghanistan of wounds caused by an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire. Nouv, a Specialist, was posthumously promoted toe Sergeant.

SGT Nouv grew up in Yorktown and graduated from Tabb High School in 2002 where she was in the marching band and flag Corp. She joined the Army in 2009 and was trained as a signal support systems specialist. She completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and advanced individual training at Fort Gordon, Ga.

SGT Nouv was on her first combat deployment in Afghanistan and was assigned as a convoy escort driver. The 359th Transportation Company had a dangerous job, providing critical security to logistical patrols throughout Northern Afghanistan. Like thousands of young men and women, SGT Nouv sought purpose and stability for herself and her family in life through the Army.

Both of SGT Nouv’s children are Folds of Honor recipients.
