Honoree's Story

Staff Sergeant Charles Eggleston began his Army career in April 1993. A few months after 9/11, he was sent to Iraq. He served three consecutive tours there and, in 2005, he was struck by an improvised explosive device in Mosul, Iraq. His condition after the explosion was so extreme that his back, head, legs, and arms had been critically damaged.

SSGT Eggleston was treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Unfortunately, his physical and mental recovery was hampered by the poor conditions and management at the hospital. He bravely spoke out against it, marking the start of his impassioned advocacy for Veterans and their caregivers.

During his recovery, SSGT Eggleston was introduced to golf by PGA golfer, Jim Estes and fell in love with the game. He now credits the sport for saving his life because it helped him take back his mental and physical well-being.

With more than 70 surgeries, SSGT Eggleston is an inspiration to all. His journey is a reminder that fitness is more than just physical. It requires a dedication to mental well-being and a refusal to give up, even in the face of challenges. His unwavering spirit and dedication to serving his country are an inspiration to us all.
