| Honoree's Story | Fire Department Captain Anthony Mock, 39, was a paramedic for the Phoenix Fire Department. He passed away January 22, 2025, following a two-year battle with occupational cancer.
Mock was a father and U.S. Air Force veteran. Becoming a Phoenix Firefighter was a lifelong dream for him, and he served the community with unmatched courage, professionalism, and heart.
Mock understood the risks of occupational cancer – a disease that is caused by chemical exposure on the job. Although he felt 100% fine when he went for a screening, they found cancer in both his right kidney and right adrenal gland. Following his diagnosis, Anthony became an outspoken advocate for early cancer screenings, urging his fellow firefighters to prioritize their health to prevent others from enduring the same tragedy. The paramedic appeared in multiple videos where he shared his story and encouraged fellow firefighters to get screened.
Being a firefighter was a “dream come true” for Mock. “I never took it for granted, not one day. I took pride in it every day,” he said.
