Golfing Achievements and National Recognition
Dominating the Colorado Golf Scene
Prater is a force in Colorado amateur golf. He is a three-time winner of the Colorado Golf Association (CGA) Amateur Championship, claiming titles in 2016, 2020, and 2024. His consistent performance has made him one of the state’s most successful amateurs in recent decades.
In addition to his amateur championships, Colin has also won multiple CGA Match Play titles and has been named CGA Player of the Year. These accolades reflect his dedication to the sport and his ability to perform under pressure while maintaining a full-time teaching role.
Historic U.S. Open Qualification in 2024
In one of the most remarkable stories in modern golf, Colin Prater qualified for the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. Competing against over 9,500 golfers in national qualifiers, he secured one of just 73 spots through a final qualifier in Bend, Oregon. This achievement made headlines nationwide—not just for his performance, but because he did it as a full-time teacher, not a touring professional.
Although he missed the cut after shooting rounds of 79 and 78, his journey captured the admiration of fans, players, and commentators alike. He practiced alongside stars like Jordan Spieth and Wyndham Clark and even received advice from Rory McIlroy.
