Staff Sergeant (SSG) George Alexander of Alexandria, Virginia was serving his third tour of duty in Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, of Fort Benning, Georgia. A 1989 graduate of Chilton County High School, SSG Alexander spent two years working as a construction laborer before joining the military in 1991.

SSG Alexander died October 22, 2005 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio of injuries sustained five days earlier when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Bradley Fighting Vehicle in Samarra, Iraq. He was the 2,000th military death since the conflict in Iraq began in 2003.

According to his sister, Sasha, SSG Alexander was suited well for the Army and saw enlisting as a way to serve his community. “He just wanted to make a difference.”

SSG Alexander is survived by his wife and two children, one of which is a Folds of Honor Higher Education scholarship recipient.
