Army Staff Sgt. Terry D. Wagoner, 28, of Piedmont, S.C. was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th U.S. Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He died Sept. 14, 2007, in Baghdad, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations.
Staff Sergeant (SSG) Terry “Daniel” Wagoner was the “middle child with a sister on each side” from Piedmont, South Carolina. He enlisted in the US Army shortly after graduating from high school. His decision to enter the military followed a tradition of five uncles who also served. “Daniel knew what he was doing,” said his father. “He was doing the right thing!” He was deployed to Iraq three times during his career - his last in 2007.
While attending Woodmont High School, SSG Wagoner excelled in running track. He ran the 440 and 880 and was ranked statewide. His father said he continued to enjoy running during his deployments in Iraq.
In 2017, SSG Wagoner was one of 40 fallen military service members that were honored on the windshield of a NASCAR Cup Series car at Charlotte Motor Speedway in an event they call “NASCAR Salutes”.
SSG Wagoner is survived by his wife, Kate, and daughter, Diana Louise, who are Folds of Honor Children’s Fund scholarship recipients.
