Branch of Service: Army
Rank: Sergeant

Army Sergeant Denis D. Kisseloff, 45, of Saint Charles, Missouri, was assigned to the 1141st Engineer Company, Missouri National Guard, out of Kansas City, Missouri. On May 14, 2010, while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom, SGT Kisseloff died at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire.

Born in the Philippines, SGT Kisseloff’s family moved to the Chicago area, where he attended and graduated from York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois. He began his military service with the Marine Corps in 1981, followed by time with the Marine Corps Reserves up until 1988.  After the death of his wife, SGT Kisseloff believed rejoining the military was the best way to provide for his family, so nineteen years after leaving the Marine Corps, SGT Kisseloff joined the Missouri Army National Guard in 2007.  SGT Kisseloff was awarded with a Purple Heart, Army Commendation medal, Army Good Conduct medal, National Defense Service medal, Afghanistan Campaign medal, among multiple other awards, for his service and sacrifice.

“He loved this country, and he loved to serve this nation,” Rev. James P. Callahan said.  “He made the ultimate sacrifice; he gave his life for our nation because he believed in this nation, and he believed in the people of America.”

Both of SGT Kisseloff’s children are Folds of Honor Scholarship recipients.
