Lance Corporal Dennis J. Veater, 20, of Jessup, Penn., was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's Marine Wing Support Squadron 472, Marine Wing Support Group 47, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, at Wyoming, Penn., and served during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was killed while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq.
A 2004 graduate of Abington Heights High School, LCpl. Veater attended Penn State Worthington-Scranton, studied criminal justice, then enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves. The youngest of six children, he was alone among his siblings in following their father, retired Sgt. Maj. Donald G. Veater, into the Marines. LCpl. Veater was awarded the Purple Heart, the Marine Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal for his service and sacrifice.
LCpl. Veater loved being in the spotlight, entertaining his family and friends by creating songs and dances, making faces and cracking jokes. He will be remembered for his good-hearted nature, eagerness to care for others and fun-loving attitude. “The words, ‘looking up to Dennis’ gave us a new meaning,” his twin brother said. “We will always be looking up.”
LCpl. Veater’s son is a Folds of Honor Scholarship recipient.
