Lt. Col. Greene was activated in January 2004 and assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 775, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Air Wing, Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, CA. Lt Col. Greene piloted the AH-1 Cobra, a two pilot attack helicopter. While flying a mission in Anbar Province, Iraq, Lt. Col. Greene’s Cobra came under attack from enemy ground fire. The attack damaged the helicopter and killed Lt. Col Greene on July 28, 2004.

Lt. Col. David Greene graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1986 before going to flight school. He was an active duty Marine from 1986-1997, deploying in Operation Desert Storm in ’91. He was stationed in North Carolina and continued to list Raleigh as his hometown, even after moving to Vermont with his wife and two kids. His funeral was held in the same church in which he and his wife married in 1989.
