Staff Sergeant Eugene Alex of Reese and Bay City, MI joined the Army in May 1996 as a way to better provide for his new family. SSG Alex was a cavalry scout in the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team based out of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska. Before deploying to Iraq in the fall of 2005, Alex gave his wife specific instructions to move the family back to Reese, Michigan if something were to happen to him.

On August 30, 2006, SSG Eugene Alex 32nd birthday, he was shot in the head by an enemy sniper while on patrol. He was flown to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and given no chance for a meaningful recovery. With his wife by his side, she honored her husband’s wishes and made the difficult decision to remove him from life support, and donated his organs. He leaves behind his wife and three children.
