Army Sgt. 1st Class Shawn C. Dostie, 32, of Granite City, Illinois, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was killed on December 30th, 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during patrol operations in Baghdad.
Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Dostie was born in Rumford, Maine January 7th, 1973. He was a graduate of Lewiston High School and received his Criminal Justice Degree from Troy University. Shawn enlisted in the Army to follow in his father’s footsteps. He was in the infantry, same as his father. He rose quickly in the Army and in his 14 years of service, was assigned to Garistadt, Germany, Vicenza, Italy, Fort Benning, Georgia and had three stops in Fort Campbell.
Sgt. 1st Class Dostie’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf cluster, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, among others.
Sgt. 1st Class Dostie was known to friends and relatives as a quiet guy and a hard worker. "He always wanted to make his way, always self-sufficient. He wanted to make people proud of him," his father said. His family remembers his bright blue eyes, his smile, sense of humor, and dancing around the house.
