On November 12, 2022, Larchmont and Mamaroneck volunteer firefighter Brian Payne, 55, passed away as a result of a 9/11-related illness.

Born in 1967 in Larchmont, New York, Payne graduated from Iona Prep before attending the University of Maryland and graduating from Iona College. He began his career in pharmaceutical and biotech sales, where he played a significant role in introducing new cancer screening for women’s health, which ultimately led to a decrease in cervical cancer deaths.
As his children were growing, he became passionate about local youth sports and held a second job as a youth hockey, baseball, softball, and basketball coach.

Payne was a member of the Larchmont Fire Department from 1989 to 2007, including serving as chief from 2001 to 2004. He then served in the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department from 2007 until his death.

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, he was assigned to Ground Zero where he was exposed to deadly toxins which ultimately took his life.

Brian Payne is survived by his wife, Sue, and his children, Charlotte, Will, Margo, and Elise.
