Army Command Sergeant Major Jerry Wilson of Thomson, GA, 45, was assigned to 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Wilson was killed when hostile forces attacked the vehicle that he was traveling in on November 23, 2003, in Mosul, Iraq.
CSM Wilson was born on 28 June 1958 in Thomson, GA. He was a McDuffie County native and a 1976 graduate of Thomson High School. Wilson entered the U.S. Army in June of 1976 and decided to make the Army his career. He was presently serving as the Command Sergeant Major at both Fort Campbell, KY. and as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Mosul, Iraq. His many honors include the Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart.
CSM Wilson was remembered as having a contagious smile. Sgt. 1st Class Julius Chambers said, “If there’s somebody in the military better at being a coach and mentor than Command Sgt. Maj. Wilson, I haven’t met him.” At least 100 uniformed soldiers were in attendance at Wilson’s memorial service.
CSM Wilson is survived by two sons, Mantrell and Sidney.
