Sergeant Mycal L. Prince, 28, of Minco, Okla., was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Brigade Combat Team at the Oklahoma National Guard. He died September 15, 2011, in Saygal Valley, Laghman province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire.
A 2001 graduate of Ninnekah High School, SGT. Prince completed his Law Enforcement Training and served as a police officer in Rush Springs, Okla., for three years and worked as a K-9 officer in Minco, Okla., for two years. SGT Prince enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard in 2000, at age 17. While enlisted, he served tours in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and a final tour in Afghanistan. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart.
“He was a true servant to his community,” said Capt. Jeremy Dunn. “Mycal wasn't content to stand on the sidelines. He was a doer, and he was always looking for ways to make a difference in someone's life. He was also a soldier. He wasn't looking for glory or fame. He was simply willing and ready when his country called.
SGT Prince is survived by his wife, Surana and daughters, Raelynn and Mycaela.
