Staff Sergeant Jason Ramseyer, 28, of Lenoir, N.C. was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He was killed April 20, 2006, while inspecting a remote-controlled roadside land mine in Anbar Province, Iraq.
Staff Sergeant Ramseyer was born in West Palm Beach, FL but moved to Lenoir with his parents in 1990. In high school, he excelled at wrestling, soccer, and baseball. Two weeks after graduation, he left for basic training.
In December 1999, SSgt Ramseyer was assigned as a Mortar Instructor at The Basic School (TBS) in Quantico, VA. While there, he became a second-degree black belt and was transferred to the Martial Arts Center of Excellence where he served as a Martial Arts Instructor Trainer.
“He would never put a Marine in a dangerous situation he was not willing to put himself in first,” said Gunnery Sgt. Michael Kiernan, “His Marines respected him because he treated them, regardless of rank, with the respect and dignity they deserved. He was a great friend and a great Marine.”
SSgt Ramseyer is survived by his wife, Amanda and children, Caleb, Riley and Cadence.
