Sergeant Nathan Field, 23, of Leigh, Iowa, was assigned to the 4249th Port Security Company, Army Reserve, in Pocahontas, Iowa. He died on January 7, 2006, when his Humvee was hit by a civilian vehicle in Umm Qasr, Iraq.
SGT Field was a 2000 graduate of Southeast Webster High School. Shortly after graduation, he joined the Army Reserves where he trained to be part of the Military Police. This was his third tour of duty.
As a civilian, SGT Field worked as a counselor at Rabiner Treatment Center, an agency that helps adolescent boys with criminal histories. His hobbies included Pheasant hunting and cheering on his favorite sports teams, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears.
Specialist Adam Zarrillo recalled, “It was great to have known SGT Field. He was a great man who cared about everyone. He was sincerely genuine in everything he did. He showed me what an NCO is supposed to be like and what I hope to become.”
SGT Field is survived by his fiancé (whom he was to marry on June 24 of that year), brother and parents.
