Navy SEAL Louis James Langlais, 44, of Santa Barbara, CA was assigned to an East Coast-based SEAL team. He died August 6, 2011, of wounds suffered when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter in which he was riding was shot down while transporting a Quick Reaction Force team attempting to reinforce an engaged unit of Army Rangers in the Wardak province of Afghanistan.

MCPO Langlais was born on October 5, 1966, in Quebec, Canada, and grew up in Santa Barbara, CA. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1986, and completed basic training at NTC San Diego, CA. He began his Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training at NAB Coronado, in February 1989.

Over a 25-year career, MCPO Langlais rose to become a troop leader in the SEAL’s elite Team Six. Not only was he a Navy SEAL, but he was also a precision parachute jumper and a rock climber who scaled cliffs, sometimes without a rope. With a striking ability to suppress fear, he was known for leading his comrades into dangerous situations with a sense of calm, confidence and even fun.

MCPO Langlais is survived by his wife, Anya, and his two sons.
