Specialist Nicholas W. Newby, 20, of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho was assigned to 145th Brigade Support Battalion, 116th Cavalry Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Idaho National Guard, Post Falls, Idaho. He died July 7, 2011, from injuries after insurgents attacked his convoy with an improvised explosive device in Baghdad, Iraq.

SPC Newby enlisted in the Army in 2008, right after graduating from The Bridge Academy where he was assigned as a mechanic. He was deployed to Iraq in September 2010.

While in Iraq, SPC Newby was completing college courses via the Internet and had plans to complete his associate’s degree before attending Boise State University. He was an avid reader, always seeking knowledge and truth.

“Nick radiated positive energy and a smile that never left his face, and his laugh was both ridiculous and infectious.” said his parents. “His favorite saying was ‘Quit whining’. Nick would do anything for anybody who needed his help. He'd stick by his friends and never gave up on anybody.”

SPC Newby is survived by his mother, Theresa Hart and father, Wayne Newby.
