Navy SEAL Nicholas Spehar, 24, of St. Paul, Minn. was assigned to a West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit in San Diego, Calif. On August 6, 2011, in Wardak province, Afghanistan, a group of Special Forces were on a mission to assist in obtaining a high value target in the mountains. While returning to base, the CH-47 Chinook Helicopter carrying the team was struck by a rocket propelled grenade, killing all 30 Americans on board. It was the largest loss of American life in a single day since the beginning of the War on Terrorism.
SO2 Spehar was a standout academic and athlete at Chisago Lakes High School. He lettered in three sports: football, baseball and swimming. Enlisting in the Navy in March of 2007, Spehar graduated from BUD/S in 2008 and completed his first assignment in Kodiak, Alaska. He then reported to the West Coast-based team in May of 2008, which sent him to Afghanistan following stints to Yemen and the Philippines.
Remembered by his fellow SEAL’s as an exceptional leader by example, a tireless worker and elite warrior. He had a deep love for his family and his devotion to his parents and siblings was unparalleled.
