State Trooper and Staff Sergeant Jerome Lemon, 42, of North Charleston, SC, was a member of the 1052nd Transportation Company, South Carolina National Guard. SSG Lemon was deployed to Balad, Iraq, where his unit was ambushed by insurgents using an improvised explosive device. Staff Sergeant Lemon died of wounds he suffered during the attack on October 27, 2004 while serving his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Jerome Lemon began his career as a sheriff’s deputy in the early 80’s. He faithfully served his community in law enforcement while also serving in the Army National Guard as a Convoy Commander. “Staff Sgt. Lemon was a man of spirit and commitment — he stood for freedom and democracy,” said South Carolina Adjutant General Stan Spears. He called Lemon a “very compassionate man with an infectious smile.” He could often be found reading his Bible and ready with a comforting word for his unit’s younger soldiers. South Carolina Adjutant General Stan Spears presented posthumous Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Good Conduct medals to Lemon’s widow and mother.

SSG Lemon’s daughter is a Folds of Honor scholarship recipient.
