Maj. Samuel M. Griffith, 36, of Virginia Beach, VA, was serving during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He died on December 14, 2011, days before his youngest son’s birthday, while conducting combat operations.

 

Raised in Raleigh, NC, Maj. Griffith attended William G. Enloe High School and went on to graduate from Penn State University where he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. Upon graduation he was commissioned in the Marine Corps and trained as a pilot.

 

Maj. Griffith loved his family, his faith and his country; his passion was to serve.  He also had a passion for Mustangs, especially his prized restored 1968 Fastback. He left behind a wife, Cassandra, and two children, now ages 9 and 10.
