Corporal Marquis McCants, 23, from San Antonio, Texas was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. CPL. McCants lost his life in May of 2007 during Operation Iraqi Freedom when enemy forces came in contact with his unit, detonating an improvised explosive device (IED) and opening small-arms fire in Baghdad, Iraq.

Cpl. McCants was an aspiring musician who joined the Army to treat the wounded and support his family. Cpl. McCants, who graduated from O'Connor High School in 2001, leaves behind a wife and three children.

“His medical knowledge, grace under pressure and attentive care to the men of his platoon earned him respect far beyond his rank and experience,” said Captain Phillip Smith, rear detachment commander of McCants battalion.
