Sergeant Anselmo Martinez, 26, from Robstown, Texas, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division based in Fort Hood, Texas and served during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. On May 18, 2007, SGT Martinez and two other soldiers were killed in Tahrir, Iraq when their unit encountered enemy forces using an improvised explosive device.

SGT Martinez enlisted in the United States Army in November 2001, as an infantryman. He attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia until April 2002.  His first duty station was Fort Benning, Georgia where he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry. While assigned to the 1/29th, SGT Martinez attending Airborne School in September 2002. He re-enlisted in November 2004 and transferred to Fort Hood, Texas where he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. SGT Martinez attended Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) and Joint Readiness Training Center in May 2006.  SGT Martinez was awarded a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Achievement medal, National Service medal, as well as several others, for his service and sacrifice.

SGT Marinez friends and family remember him for his selfless nature and his willingness to give himself up for everybody. Part of his decision to join the Army was to “provide for his wife and two daughters.”

SGT Martinez’s daughter is a Folds of Honor Scholarship recipient.
