Soldier Honored: Matthew S. Sitton

Army Staff Sergeant Matthew S. Sitton, 26, of Largo, Florida was assigned to 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and served during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. On August 2, 2012, SSG Sitton and another soldier died of wounds caused by an enemy improvised explosive device in Zharay, Kandahar province, Afghanistan. It was his third tour of duty.

A graduate of Indian Rocks Christian School in Largo, Florida, SSG Sitton joined the Army in March 2006. His military training included Airborne School, Long Range Reconnaissance Course, U.S. Army Ranger Course, U.S. Army Sniper School, Warrior's Leader Course and Advanced Leaders Course. He was an amazing sniper, graduating top of his class. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal with one knot, the National Defense Service Medal, the Expert Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.

SSG Sitton enjoyed every second of life. He is survived by his wife Sarah and his son. Pride is almost inadequate to describe how they feel about SSG Sitton’s sacrifice. He displayed many exceptional qualities and will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, dedication and honor.

SSG Sitton’s son is a Folds of Honor Scholarship recipient.
