Soldier Honored: Nelson D. Trent

Army Sergeant First Class Nelson D. Trent, 37, of Austin, Texas, was assigned to the 56^th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 36^th Infantry Division based in Fort Worth, Texas and served during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. On December 13, 2012, SFC Trent died when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His wife, April, was also in the Army and serving just a few hundred miles away. She accompanied his body home to Texas.

SFC Trent graduated from Whitehouse High School in 1993. Following a career in the Army, he entered the Texas Army National Guard in June 2006. Prior to deploying to Afghanistan, SFC Trent was a communications noncommissioned officer assigned to Joint Task Force 71; a National Guard homeland response team. SFC Trent was posthumously awarded the rank of Sergeant 1st Class.

SFC Trent’s awards and accolades include the Bronze Star medal, the Purple Heart, six Army Commendation medals, three Army Achievement medals, two Army Good Conduct medals, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service medals, four Iraq Campaign medals with a Bronze Service Star, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with a Bronze Service Star, the Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, the NATO medal, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service medal for his service and sacrifice.

SFC Trent’s two children are Folds of Honor Scholarship recipients.
