Army Sergeant First Class Lance H. Vogeler, 29, of Frederick, Maryland was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia.  He was deployed 12 times in nine years; four to Iraq and eight to Afghanistan.  On October 10, 2011, his unit was caught in a heavy firefight during combat operations in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.  Sgt. 1st Class Vogeler died from the wounds he sustained during the insurgent attack.

A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Sgt. 1st Class Vogeler was active in Boy Scouts and enjoyed soccer.  He enlisted in the Army in May 2001 and graduated from the Ranger training program later that year.  After serving for multiple years, Sgt. 1st Class Vogeler was given the opportunity to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, but he decided he wanted to remain with his men.

“I wish the American people could truly understand the dedication and sacrifice that Lance Vogeler made for his country,” said Col. Michael E. Kurilla. “Since December 2001, Lance has either been in combat or training for combat. Lance was the quintessential Ranger; he is a hero to our Nation, the Army, and his family.” He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star medal and the Meritorious Service medal.

SFC Vogeler’s son is a Folds of Honor Children’s Fund Scholarship recipient.
